Although tiles have been made in Morocco for centuries, the production of encaustic cement tiles first began in the late nineteenth century, a few decades after they were first developed in Europe. The manufacturing process today remains essentially the same.

Made by hand, one at a time, the tiles are composed of a mixture of cement, marble powder, and fine sand. To create the tiles' vibrant colors, natural mineral pigments are stirred into the liquid cement.

Pattern is achieved by pouring the desired colors into sections of a handmade metal mold. The cement mixture is then compressed with a hydraulic press and allowed to cure.
