This project was a gut-remodel of an existing 3400 square foot, 4 bedroom 4.5 bathroom home located in the bluffs above Malibu. Jamie re-envisioned the home, which was built in the 1970’s, into a warm, organic, modernist beach house overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

SEASIDE RETREAT

The architect, Daniel Monti from Modal Design, was charged with the task of taking an unremarkable existing structure and making into an architecturally compelling home. He converted the existing chopped up public spaces into an open plan as well as expanding roof decks and patios oriented towards the ocean blurring the indoor-outdoor living spaces.

Jamie was brought on early in the process to define the overall design aesthetic. We selected all the architectural finishes including silver travertine flooring, cerused gray oak paneling, flooring and cabinetry, bronze and silver metals, and textural cork wallpaper contracted against crisp white plaster.

The furnishings are a combination of custom design and found sculptural pieces. The focus was to express the natural materials of the pieces in a bold yet honest way.

Our goal was to create an ethereal, sun-kissed natural palette that echoed the environment around it.

The natural imperfections of the materials become the decoration: whether it be inclusions in the hand blown glass sconces, irregular veining in the marble bench, or growth rings in the wood coffee table.

The edited, sculptural furnishings are meant to be evocative of the rocky outcroppings of the shoreline and influenced by all things from the land and sea.
